Ghost world; a world that was fading.
When I started this graphic novel I was at a loss, I felt grossed out because of how cruel and natural it was with topics such as paedophilia, incest, Satanist, and sick relationships, on the other hand the type of images used, and how the dialogues took place caught my attention, so I said who I am to judge a book for its first 10 pages so I keep reading, and I was happy with what I found (it never stopped being crude and cruel).
First of all we have two female characters who are as strong and weak as one can be at the end of high school. They have a twisted relationship in which Enid always has a crazy plan for them to execute, a place to see or a prank to make.
And then we have Rebecca who is more of a quiet girl who follows Enid around and backs-up even the stupidest plans.
Both their lives and their relationships take a turn when Enid applies for a college, is then when e see most of the conflicts and storyline of the novel.
As stated before Enid was a "punk" girl who hated fashion and trends and never wore punk clothes she was rebellious against the town in which she lived, and was trying to make a fresh start somewhere. Though she appreciated her friendship she believed that what she needed was an identity, a none defining identity that she could never get in her home town.
And then we have Rebecca who felt inferior to Enid because all of the boys they have met were in love with Enid and not with her, she appreciated her relationship, but as Enid wanted a new start she wanted a reliable friendship, someone who connected with her and told her about important decisions.
I came to the conclusion while reading the graphic novel that both the creepy stories of those who surrounded the girls and the style of the drawing were created in order to show how decadence falls upon us when we start taking risks and changing, though those changes are not necessary conscious decisions we state a before and an after in our lives when we realize how lousy our surroundings are.
To close this I have to say that the end of the novel was what broke me, Enid coming back to town and chasing the kid that writes "ghost world" everywhere was tremendous, she did make a new start, but she always wondered why it was written and it was a mark of the past that she could not let go, and when she could not chase after him, she sees Rebecca and realise that the love and affection she held for her friend has transform to a nostalgic feeling as she says:
you´ve grown into a very beautiful young woman"
